Airbnb is a popular alternative for a lot of travelers, myself included. I personally look up AirBnB’s before I start looking at hotels for my own travel needs. They’re more comfortable and generally can be less expensive than a hotel but still provide the amenities we love in a hotel. So the real question becomes when is getting an AirBnb a better choice over a hotel and the answer is it depends! Here are some questions to ask yourself or group when making the decision.
Where are you traveling to?
Certain destinations are better for “AirBnBing” than others. For example, I always rather get an AirBnB in Mexico than stay in a resort. I can find an extremely cheap luxury rental, purchase my own liquor and eat out everyday for less than I would be able to do in a resort. Cab rides are easy and cheap and I can get around to all of the bars and restaurants with ease.
Many destinations have really expensive hotels, for example London hotels can be pricey. You can get a luxury apartment all to yourself, near public transportation for a fraction of the price of a hotel. Likewise, Miami is a great place to choose AirBnB over hotels. Pricing for hotels on Ocean or Collins can be expensive and you aren’t afforded refrigerators. You can get an AirBnB for a fraction of the hotel costs and will be able to make a meal or keep your leftovers as will have a kitchen.
Group or just 2 friends traveling?
If you are in a larger group then an air bnb may be a better option. Large luxury Air BnBs are a great option for groups. They offer the same hotel amenities like a pool and staff but the cost for the house per person tends to be much cheaper than a hotel. This is a great way to keep the group feel but still allow people to do things separately if they want to. If you are just traveling with a friend then a hotel may be a better choice if you are looking to be social with others.
Are we looking for a more authentic trip?
The one thing I love about getting an AirBnB is your host will have a ton of helpful tips and suggestions for getting a feel for how the locals experience a destination. I always ask my host for places to eat off the beaten path. Also within the AirBnB app they have experiences that are lead by locals which is another way to connect with the authenticity of a location
Hopefully this helps you make your decision, keep an eye out for more helpful AirBnB tips!
