Havana Adventures 2019

The People

I can truly say the best part of Cuba is the people. We did a rum tasting at Pazillo and met a bartender who created all of the artisan rums on site and he was so much fun. We laughed and took shots and had the best time. We ended up with a great driver named Angel, who happened to be the driver the house uses all the time and I couldn’t have had a better driver. Our first night he took us to where the Cuban’s party to show us a good time. He made sure to take us out on other nights and on one of our last nights invited all of us to his house for his wife’s birthday! We were family that night and If I could have figured out how to get the food home I would have it was so good!

Not only was this the first trip for Black and Traveled this was my first time traveling to Cuba. As you know traveling to Cuba can be a bit confusing and for the most part people are even confused as to whether or not you can travel to Cuba. Well you definitely can and I suggest if you get the opportunity you absolutely should!

When staying in Cuba you cannot stay in a hotel, because you have to choose “support of the Cuban people ” as your designation for traveling to Cuba you have to stay in an air bnb. I found a great house, El RIncon Habanero, that had a pool, and a staff that included a house manager, bartender, night security and cook. The bar was a cash bar but I’ve never had a better mojito! The staff was amazing, they were very helpful our entire stay and honestly they made our stay that much better.

City Tours and Old Time Cars

You’ve seen the pictures and it’s exactly what you’ll see when you get there, old time cars are everywhere! What you may not know is that those cars are a serious investments, purchasing one can cost someone 30k alone which may sound normal but when you take into account how much Cubans make a month which can be as low as $20 and as high as $200 you can see why that’s such a hefty price. If it’s your first time in Cuba you must have a city tour in the one of the old cars. We were fortunate enough to do a half walking and half car tour that was great. We learned a lot about old Havana, went to the market and then drove around the city and up to the statue of Jesus.

Shopping, Dancing & Cigars

As we walked the streets of old Havana the one thing I loved is that in one doorway you would find someone sitting on their front step but right next door it would be a small bar and the next door way is a leather shop. The streets are rich with culture and opportunities for a unique experience.  The same can be said for the nightlife, we were in luck enough to be staying in Miramar and right on the same block were two popular bar/restaurants.

On a night where we wanted to keep the party going we ended up seeing a live band and wouldn’t you know one of us the traveler will remain unnamed (you had to be there) ended up on stage! I can’t possibly talk about Cuba and not mention cigars. I personally do not partake in cigars but I know many do and I know enough to know to bring some back home to the cigar lovers I know.
